Taipans' injury blow on eve of NBL season

Cairns' NBL import Michael Carrera faces at least a month on the sidelines after having surgery to repair a tear in his right knee.

Cairns have suffered a major blow ahead of next Friday's NBL season opener with import Michael Carrera out for at least a month with a knee injury.

The Venezuelan international hurt his knee in a pre-season clash against Perth last Saturday and has already had surgery.

The forward had been impressive for the Taipans since his arrival, but will miss between four to six weeks in what is a massive setback for coach Aaron Fearne's side.

The Taipans finished second last season, but were bundled out of the semi-finals by eventual champions Perth.

The club opens its season against last season's grand finalists Illawarra in Cairns on Friday.
