Talbot keeps Phoenix Mercury alive in WNBA

Australian Stephanie Talbot's Phoenix Mercury will play the top-ranked Seattle Storm in the next round of the WNBA playoffs.

Australia's Stephanie Talbot hit a late three-pointer to help the Phoenix Mercury knock the Connecticut Sun out of the WNBA Playoffs.

The Mercury's 96-86 victory in a second-round sudden-death game in Connecticut on Thursday sets up a semi-final series clash against the WNBA's top-seeded Seattle Storm.

It was a ferocious battle, with multiple lead changes in the final quarter.

The Mercury, coached by Australian Olympic coach Sandy Brondello, appeared in trouble trailing 84-81 with three minutes to go.

Katherine-born Talbot, after badly missing an earlier long range shot, stepped up to hit the three-pointer to even the score.

The Mercury, led by All-Stars Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, fed off the shot and went on a 9-0 run to extinguish the Sun's playoff hopes.

"We just played really gutsy today," Taurasi said.

"We didn't play great, but we found a way to win."

Talbot had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

Taurasi and Griner both had 27 points.

The Mercury's other Australian, guard Leilani Mitchell, went scoreless in her four minutes on the court.

The Sun's Courtney Williams also had 27 points.

In Thursday's other playoff game, Elena Delle Donne had 19 points and 12 rebounds as her Washington Mystics thumped the Los Angeles Sparks 96-64.

Washington will open a best-of-five semi-final series against Atlanta on Sunday.
