Talks between Melbourne rail operator Metro Trains and the Rail Tram and Bus Union aimed at averting a four-hour strike planned for next week will resume on Thursday morning.

RTBU members with Metro Trains and Yarra Trams will stop work between 10am and 2pm on August 21 in support of an enterprise bargaining claim.

RTBU Victorian secretary Luba Grigorovitch says there has been some progress in talks with Yarra Trams and Metro Trains, but the parties remain "miles apart".

The union executive voted unanimously on Wednesday afternoon in support of the four-hour stoppage, but Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the action was provocative and unnecessary.

The union will allow commuters a free ride on Wednesday and Friday next week.

Metro Trains spokeswoman Sammie Black said there is still hope for a resolution.

"We are continuing to talk and negotiate and believe there is still time to reach an agreement and avoid any network stoppages," she said.

Talks with Yarra Trams are expected to begin again on Friday.
