Tall order for West Coast netball rivals

Star West Coast Fever recruit Jhaniele Fowler doesn't need any help striking fear into the heart of her opponent, but an ongoing error has helped her cause anyway.

Fowler is one of the tallest players in world netball, with the Jamaican's towering presence causing issues for defenders from all walks of life.

When her opponents do their homework on Fowler, they see her listed at a daunting 198cm.

But Fowler has revealed that the 198cm figure which has been listed for years is actually incorrect.

"I'm actually 196cm. But you can leave it at 198cm, put some fear into people," Fowler said with a laugh.

Fowler recently helped lift Jamaica to a shock victory over New Zealand in the bronze medal match at the Commonwealth Games.

Now, she's keen to help turn the Fever from easy beats to hardened finalists.

The Fever only narrowly avoided the wooden spoon last season after managing just two wins from 14 games.

But the recruitment of Fowler and the return from injury of Shannon Eagland has boosted hopes of a swift rise up the ranks.

Fowler has been a dominant force for NZ outfit Southern Steel over the past four years.

But the star goalshooter knows she can't rely solely on her height to get the job done as she prepares for her first season in the Super Netball league.

"There are advantages being tall. But there are pretty awesome defenders in the league, which makes it not easy," Fowler said.

"I still feel I have to put up a lot of work just to get the ball and relax and shoot it.

"It's not just stand there, catch, and shoot. It doesn't work that way."

Fowler was always destined to play a sport where height was an asset.

"The moment I came out of the womb, the doctor told my mum I was going to be a pretty tall girl," Fowler said.

"Being tall has its ups and downs. I've always towered over all my peers. I was always loved.

"People always wanted me to lead them. I reckon my height brought on a certain responsibility from me, like having a leadership role growing up."

West Coast start their campaign against the Thunderbirds in Adelaide on Sunday.
