Tancred admits to threatening de Jong

Australian Olympic Committee media director Mike Tancred has formally apologised to former AOC chief Fiona de Jong for threatening to damage her reputation.

Australian Olympic Committee media director Mike Tancred admits he had threatened to damage the reputation of former AOC chief executive Fiona de Jong.

An independent committee comprising three former judges determined last month that Tancred's behaviour towards de Jong amounted to disreputable conduct, although it did not rise to the level of bullying.

He was severely reprimanded.

Tancred remains stood down from his position with the AOC while the AOC-appointed independent committee investigates further complaints lodged by other people against him.

Tancred's formal apology to de Jong was issued on June 1 but only made public on Tuesday.

"In December last year I rang Fiona de Jong about an internal matter at the AOC," Tancred said in the statement.

"During the course of our conversation, I spoke to Ms de Jong in an intimidating manner, and made threats to damage her and her reputation by publishing allegations about her.

"I acknowledge that my conduct was, hurtful, inappropriate and inconsistent with the values of the AOC.

"I also accept that I caused Ms de Jong considerable distress.

" ... I wish to record that I have made an unqualified apology to Ms de Jong for my conduct and its impact upon her."

De Jong initially lodged a complaint to AOC president John Coates on December 15, 2016, vehemently denying that she had leaked board discussions to the media.

Shortly afterwards, de Jong said she was contacted by Tancred

"He said, 'Fiona, withdraw the complaint or I will bury you,'" she told Fairfax Media.

Tancred had denied any wrongdoing when first confronted by de Jong's allegations of bullying.

De Jong left the AOC last December.

The AOC has committed to an independent review into its workplace practices.
