Firearm amnesties will be held across Tasmania in a bid to keep guns out of the hands of crooks.

Unregistered firearms and ammunition can be handed in on Saturday with no questions asked about their origin, or fear of prosecution, Sergeant Peter May said.

"Any gun handed in to us is a gun that cannot then be stolen or used by criminals," he said.

Officers will be at locations in Hobart, Launceston, Port Sorell and Ulverstone on Saturday.
