Tas woman dies from gunshot wound

A woman has died in hospital after a roadside shooting in Tasmania.

A woman has died from a gunshot wound to the head following a roadside attack in Hobart's northern suburbs.

A 73-year-old Huon Valley man has been charged with the murder of the 37-year-old, believed to be his estranged partner.

Police say the woman was shot in Risdon Road, New Town, at 3.15pm on Thursday after her former partner stopped her car and fired several shots.

Her companion, a 53-year-old woman who received injuries to her hand and arm, is in a stable condition in hospital.

The man was arrested at the scene after he was restrained by a passing motorist.

Police, who recovered the firearm allegedly used in the attack, are appealing for witnesses.

The woman was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital but later died.

The man will appear in court on Friday.
