Taxi booking app goCatch is posing another challenge to industry giant Cabcharge with the trial of a new wireless payment system,.
GoCatch will give some of its taxi drivers the Mint Payments terminals in a month-long trial following a deal with the ASX-listed company.
The partnership opens goCatch up to fare revenue from taxis hailed on street corners or cab ranks, rather than those booked through the app.
"Roughly half of all taxi jobs in Australia are hailed from the street or taxi rank, representing a big opportunity for goCatch to monetise payments for these journeys," goCatch boss Ned Moorfield said in a statement on Monday.
The Mint payment terminals consist of a pocket-sized card reader that uses the taxi driver's smartphone or tablet as the EFTPOS machine.
They will be tested in a pilot group in Sydney, before being rolled out across goCatch's base of 35,000 licensed drivers.
The app's foray into the $5.4 billion regulated taxi market is another challenge for industry giant Cabcharge which is already battling competition from start-ups Ingogo and Uber.
GoCatch has received funding from a number of prominent investors including James Packer and Seek co-founder Paul Bassat.
