Taxi clocks 185km/h during NSW chase

A man has been arrested after allegedly reaching speeds of 185km/h in a stolen taxi during a police chase on a NSW highway.

A man led police on a high-speed chase in a taxi allegedly stolen in Victoria before being arrested trying to steal a four-wheel drive in NSW.

Police were notified after reports a man had stolen a taxi from a petrol station at Tarneit, west of Melbourne, on Saturday morning.

NSW officers spotted the vehicle several hours later about 330 kilometres northwest on the Hume Highway at Albury and began pursuing the taxi, though the chase was called off when the vehicle reached speeds of up to 185km/h.

The taxi was eventually stopped using road spikes near Tarcutta, about 130km northwest of Albury.

The driver again tried to flee but was arrested trying to steal a LandCruiser, NSW Police said in a statement.

A 35-year-old Victorian man is due to face Wagga Wagga Local Court on Monday on a string of charges including two counts of police pursuit and assault.
