Taxi driver charged over pedestrian death

A 51-year-old taxi driver has been charged after an elderly woman died when she was knocked down while crossing a busy Sydney highway on Tuesday morning.

A taxi driver will face court over the death of a 94-year-old woman who was hit by a car while crossing a busy Sydney highway.

The elderly woman was knocked down, allegedly by a taxi, while crossing the Pacific Highway at Crows Nest late on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told police the driver left the scene.

Police arrested a 51-year-old man in Redfern on Tuesday evening and seized a taxi for forensic examination.

The man, from South Granville, has been refused bail and will appear in Sydney's Central Local Court on Wednesday, police said.

He has been charged with a number of offences including dangerous driving causing and failure to stop after a car crash that caused death.
