All budding teachers will have to pass practical classroom-ready tests before graduating from university under a new federal government plan.

The new assessments will operate from 2018, adding to an existing literacy and numeracy test.

"Graduate teachers deserve to know that they have the skills to succeed in the classroom just as students, parents and principals deserve to know that new teachers have been given the best possible skills," Education Minister Simon Birmingham said on Thursday.
