Outspoken rocker Ted Nugent has publicly apologised to Barack Obama after calling the US President a "subhuman mongrel".

Fervent republican Nugent made the remark during an interview with Guns.com in January, when he was asked about his thoughts on Democrat Obama.

In full, he called the president "a Chicago communist-raised, communist-educated, communist-nurtured subhuman mongrel."

Nugent has now retracted some of his wording.

In a new radio interview, he says, "I do apologise - not necessarily to the President - but on behalf of much better men than myself."

Nugent said he wishes he had used "more understandable language".
