Teen arrested after wrapping Mercedes around tree in high-speed crash

A Chinese teenager who wrapped his parents' Mercedes around a tree after clocking 250km/h in a 50km/h zone in Canada last year was finally arrested on Wednesday.

Yue Hui Wang, 19, was arrested as soon as his plane touched down at Vancouver Airport, a trip he embarked on to reach his Canadian citizenship ceremony.

Police allege that in the early hours of April 12, 2015, Mr Wang was driving a friend home in his parents' Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 coupe when he cranked the speed to an incredible 250km/h in a 50km/h zone.

He lost control and hurtled through an intersection on the opposite side of the road, eventually crashing through a private property.

It took authorities an hour to find the V8 sportscar.

The crash sent Mr Wang's 17-year-old passenger to intensive care with brain swelling, broken bones and head trauma.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in Canada, but Mr Wang had already returned to China.
Vancouver Police Constable Brian Montague labelled the teenage pair’s survival as “nothing more than a fluke” during a press conference on Wednesday.

“We’re very lucky, I think, that we didn’t pull two dead bodies out of this vehicle,” he said

“The driver was relatively unharmed, believe it or not."

Montague said he couldn't confirm if Mr Wang knew there was a warrant for his arrest while in China.

Mr Wang is facing charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, which is a charge in a case of speeding.
Despite being released pending his next court appearance, Mr Wang was forced to turn over his Chinese passport and banned from driving all vehicles.

His speed at the time of the crash was estimated by the length of skid marks and the vehicle’s electronic data recorders.

“The fact that when they crossed over the centre line, and there was no traffic coming the other way was very lucky… (Otherwise) I’d imagine both vehicles would have been disintegrated,” Mr Montague said.

“When the investigators told me how fast he was travelling I honestly didn’t believe it."
