A teenage girl has had her left leg severed at the knee in a wakeboarding accident on the Murray River.

The incident took place about 8.30pm on Friday when the 15-year-old girl was wakeboarding behind a power boat at Bundalong in Victoria.

She fell into the water and when the boat turned back, its propeller struck her left leg, severing it above the knee.

A number of off-duty nurses were in a nearby boat and gave the teen first aid until paramedics arrived.

The girl was airlifted to the Melbourne Children's Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police from Albury Local Area Command seized the boat for mechanical inspection. The 45-year-old male driver has been interviewed.
