A teenage boy who went into cardiac arrest and died after having a medical episode at a Newcastle public pool has been remembered as a strong and sweet boy.
The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at Lambton Pool when 17-year-old Pono Aperahama allegedly lashed out at employees and had to be restrained by witnesses until police arrived.
Pono starting punching himself in the head and as people at the pool complex tried to help, it's alleged he tried to assault them.
Members of the public and then the police had to restrain the teen who was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he died from a cardiac arrest.
Pono's sister Piki Aperahama described him as a sweet boy who will always be remembered.
"My sweet boy, the strongest person I know, my heart hurts for you, for our family, we were so close to being together, so close," she posted on Facebook.
"I feel like a small piece of me is gone and it really hurts."
Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell, Northern Region Commander said the people who tried to help Pono were courageous.
"I think they were courageous quite frankly. They've gone in there for no other reason but to support the young person," he said.
NSW police have launched a critical incident investigation, which will be subject to an independent review.
