Police have charged a 15-year-old boy with starting a fire in bushland near homes in the coastal WA town of Geraldton.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with lighting a bushfire in Western Australia's mid-west.

The fire, which started just before noon on Saturday, burnt several acres of bushland near homes in the coastal town of Geraldton.

Police arrested the boy in nearby bushland and charged him with an arson offence.

He is scheduled to appear in the Geraldton Children's Court in February.
