A Melbourne schoolboy wrongly identified by Fairfax Media as a terror suspect says it has damaged the reputation of his whole family.

Fairfax published a photo of Abubakar Alam, alongside the headline "teenage terrorist", wrongly identifying him as 18 year old Numan Haider, who was shot dead after attacking anti-terrorism police in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Abubakar, who's in his final year of secondary school, says his family migrated to Australia from Afghanistan to escape violence, after his grandfather was killed by a suicide bomber.

He spoke with Abdullah Alikil, from SBS Radio's Pashto program, about the shock of being identified by Fairfax.
