Telstra has been forced to modify its promotion of the Channel Seven Olympics app to clear up confusion over its involvement with the Games.

Telstra's rival Optus is the official sponsor of the Australian Olympic Committee.

The new ad campaign features a closing tag line "Official technology partner of Seven's Olympic Games coverage".

That prompted the AOC to send legal letters to Telstra, reminding it of the strict rules governing brand association with the Games and the use of terms such as partner.

Telstra, which has previously been an official sponsor of the AOC, then tweaked the promo to distance itself from the Olympic Games, and added a disclaimer.

"The advertising is still running in market. We have updated it to make it clear that Telstra is not an official sponsor of the Olympic Games, the Australian Olympic team or of the Australian or International Olympic Committees," Telstra said in a statement.

Optus declined to comment on the matter.
