Telstra looks to scrap pen and paper

Telstra has made an undisclosed investment in an e-signature startup as part of a continued push into Silicon Valley.

Telstra is pushing further into Silicon Valley with an undisclosed investment in e-signature startup DocuSign.

The US firm, reportedly valued at $US1.6 billion ($A1.73 billion), lets people sign and return documents electronically, scrapping the need for pen and paper.

Telstra is on a mission to transition from a conventional telco into a fully fledged digital business, and is looking abroad for opportunities.

In August the company spent $US270 million to take a controlling stake in Silicon Valley video-streaming company Ooyala.

The DocuSign investment comes as Apple ramps up its authentication credentials via the fingerprint recognition system on its newer iPhones, including the just-released iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Telstra says it will adopt DocuSign technology internally as part of the deal, and plans to roll it out as a product to business and enterprise customers before the end of the year.

DocuSign boasts 40 million users in 188 countries.
