Telstra has announced it's cutting 800 jobs from it's struggling directories company, Sensis.

It comes just a month after the telco agreed to sell a 70 per cent stake in Sensis to a US private equity business.

Sensis operates a number of directories including the Yellow Pages, White Pages and the 1234 and 12456 Call Connect phone services.

In a statement, the company said the jobs would come from Sensis' advertising operations, sales, management and support areas.

The cuts comes as the company transition to a digital focus said the managing director, John Allen in the statement.

He also said Sensis would now commence consultation with employees and unions on the proposed changes.

“These are very difficult decisions and are never taken lightly. We are working with our people to keep them informed and to provide support for those who may be affected by the proposed changes should they proceed.”
