Ten-year terror threat: Vic police chief

New Chief Commissioner of Police Graham Ashton says Victoria's terror threat will persist for a decade, and the drug ice is another major problem.

Terrorism will continue to be a threat to the community for a decade, Victoria's new police chief commissioner predicts.

Graham Ashton was announced on Monday as the permanent replacement for retiring Chief Commissioner Ken Lay, who stepped down from the role in January.

When asked on Tuesday about the likelihood of a terrorist attack in Victoria, Mr Ashton said "there's an inevitability about it" and highlighted the increasing level of threats nationwide.

Mr Ashton said he expected the terrorism threat to persist for a decade, and the level would vary depending on the nature of intelligence.

"Around the country we've had more terrorist events, and events we've been able to disrupt, in the last six months than we have had in the previous 10 years," Mr Ashton said on 3AW.

"On that basis you have to say eventually, luck's not going to play a role and bad luck will kick in, but we're going to work real hard to make sure that doesn't happen."

Mr Ashton said the drug ice was also having a dramatic effect on Victoria, particularly in rural areas being targeted by bikies who were running the drug.

"We know that in relation to country towns such as Mildura, one bikie gang went there with the stated intention of destroying the town," he said.

Mr Ashton will take on the role as Victoria Police's Chief Commissioner from July.
