Tennis coach Cahill joins Power AFL board

Darren Cahill's decision to take a 12-month break from tennis coaching has opened the door for him to join Port Adelaide AFL club's board of directors.

Port Adelaide have lured a world-renowned coach their way, but Ken Hinkley shouldn't be worried.

The Power announced on Friday that former tennis player Darren Cahill - the son of Port Adelaide great John - had been appointed to the AFL club's board of directors.

Cahill won two singles titles and 13 doubles crowns before retiring in 1995.

As a coach, Cahill has helped Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt and, most recently, Simona Halep to become world No.1s.

Last month, Cahill announced he would take a 12-month break from tennis coaching to spend more time with his family.

The decision meant he parted ways with Halep, who won the French Open in June under the guidance of Cahill.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch revealed the club had been trying to get Cahill to become a director for some time.

Cahill had been an ambassador in recent years, and felt the time was right to become more involved.

"I have been close to David Koch for some time and now feels like the right time to take on this challenge at the club that I love," Cahill said.

"I grew up loving this club and, although I've been away for many years on the other side of the world, I have always followed the club's progress with great interest."

The Power finished a disappointing 10th in 2018, with their off-season recruits taking time to adjust.

John Cahill was Port's inaugural AFL coach in 1997. Before their entry to the national competition, he coached Port to 10 SANFL premierships, won four titles as a player and captained them from 1968-73.
