Tensions rise over claims Australia paid people smugglers

Diplomatic tension is again high between Australia and Indonesia, amid claims Australian authorities bribed people smugglers to return to Indonesia.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott won't confirm or deny the claims six asylum seeker boat crew members were paid nearly $40,000 by Australian officials to turn their boats back.

Indonesian authorities are investigating whether any local or international laws were broken.

Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla says any such payments would be bribes, which would be unethical and Australia could be considered a party in trafficking.
