Territorians quizzed on surrogacy laws

The Northern Territory government is seeking the views of people on the introduction of altruistic surrogacy laws.

Northern Territorians are being encouraged to have their say on altruistic surrogacy amid concerns local families are missing out.

The Territory is the only Australian jurisdiction that has no legislation covering altruistic surrogacy - where a woman agrees to have a child for another person for no financial benefit or reward.

The government will stage public forums in Darwin on Friday and in Alice Springs on Monday to hear what people think.

"Territory families and surrogates deserve the best possible access to services and protections," Health Minister Natasha Fyles said.

"The forums are an opportunity to have open and informed discussions about altruistic surrogacy and whether the Territory should explore introducing legislation."
