Two men charged with planning a terrorist act will remain in custody after their case was mentioned briefly in a Sydney court.

Omar al-Kutobi and Mohammad Kiad, both in their 20s, were allegedly about to target a member of the public with a knife when they were arrested at the 11th hour at their granny flat in western Sydney on February 10.

Their lawyer Adam Houda did not apply for bail at Central Local Court on Monday and the case was adjourned until May 6.

Mr Houda told the court he had only recently been assigned to the case and had met the pair for the first time on Friday.

He indicated outside the court that the pair planned to plead not guilty.

Police allege a machete, a hunting knife and an Islamic State flag were seized from the pair's home in Fairfield.

A video showing one of the men vowing an attack in the name of IS was also allegedly found.

Mr Houda said he had watched the video, which he described as "the essential feature of this case".

"It's not convincing to me," he told reporters on Monday.
