Terror bill titled allegiance to Australia

The Abbott government's citizenship stripping legislation for dual nationals suspected of terrorism has been given a nationalistic title.

The Abbott government has labelled its legislative changes to the nation's citizenship laws as the Allegiance to Australia Bill.

The bill, introduced to parliament on Wednesday by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, aims to block the return of dual citizens suspected of terrorism.

It also allows the government to deport court-convicted terrorists.

Labor MP Ed Husic said it was unusual the opposition hadn't been briefed in advance of the bill's introduction, especially for such important measures.

"In terms of run-of-the-mill legislation we have it a few days in advance to mull over it and be able to then respond and raise issues," he told Sky.

"I would hope that this is a one-off."
