Test quick Ryan Harris says he's progressing well following knee surgery and has resumed running.

The 34-year-old paceman went under the knife after bowling Australia to victory in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town in March 2014.

Harris said he ran on Tuesday on a special treadmill.

"You're not running at full body weight so it takes the weight off my legs," Harris said on Friday.

"I had another go today so it's progressing. The knee's going well."

The 24-Test veteran, who knows he could be only one more injury away from retirement, has already started working on his next career as a coach.

Harris is an assistant coach of the Australia A side which will take on India A in two four-day games at Allan Border Field. The first game starts on Sunday.

Australia A will also play two four-day matches against South Africa A in Townsville.

Harris said he was surprised to be asked by Cricket Australia's team performance manager Pat Howard to dip his toe into the coaching ranks.

"I'm definitely interested in coaching," Harris said.

"Darren Lehmann (Australia's coach) and Pat Howard knew that and probably saw an opportunity with me being injured, it was a good opportunity to get in and to experience it and see if I am any good at it.

"I jumped at it."

Harris said he had worked with Australia A seamers Chadd Sayers and Ben Cutting over the past few weeks, emphasising the need for a patient line and length to mirror the Test side's strategies.

"I'm just passing on that knowledge that Craig McDermott and Ali De Winter have passed on to me," Harris said.

Australia's next Test assignment is in the UAE in October against Pakistan, followed by a home series against India.

The Pakistan series is unlikely to feature Harris, who is being set for a big home summer including the World Cup campaign.
