Police have removed a suspicious package from the Indonesian embassy in Canberra and its contents will be determined by pathology tests.

The embassy received a letter containing an unknown substance on Monday morning.

Authorities sent a Hazmat truck, four fire tankers and several police cars to the embassy in Yarralumla and cordoned off the nearby area.

Officers in protective clothing removed the package from the building.

The embassy was initially locked down and staff movements inside restricted to avoid exposure.
