In just 20 years, text messaging has changed the way we communicate, but there are signs people are increasingly relying on free internet messaging applications and on social media to communicate instantly in a few words.

Seven trillion SMS are sent worldwide every year from phone to phone and the service has made phone companies billions of dollars.
