Thai arrest over Vic good Samaritan murder

A third Thai man has been arrested over the murder of Melbourne man Luke Mitchell, who was killed in 2009 while trying to save another man.

A man wanted over the 2009 murder of Melbourne good Samaritan Luke Mitchell has been arrested in Thailand.

Thai police took the 31-year-old Thai national into custody in Phuket on Tuesday, Victoria police say.

He is the third person to be arrested in relation to the death.

Mr Mitchell, 29, was fatally bashed and stabbed while trying to save another man being assaulted on the popular Sydney Road night-life strip in Brunswick more than five years ago.

His alleged killers fled to Thailand just hours after the stabbing.

Victoria Police say they are working with the Attorney-General's department and the Office of Public Prosecutions on the extradition of the 31-year-old.

A spokesman for the Attorney-General's department said Australia had made a request for the Thai national's provisional arrest pending extradition.

"The man is wanted to face prosecution in Australia for murder and related offences," the spokesman said.

"As the matter is now before the Thai courts it would not be appropriate to comment further."

Two others, Thai national Sarud Seehaverachart, 31, and dual Thai-Australian citizen Thatiya Terdputham, 39, are charged with Mr Mitchell's murder.

They were extradited to Australia where they remain in custody.
