Thai court defers election date ruling

Thailand's Constitutional Court has delayed making a ruling on whether a general election planned for February 2 can be postponed.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has declared a 60-day state of emergency in Bangkok and surrounding areas effective from Wednesday in response to protests that have continued for the third consecutive month.

The Election Commission says the country is too volatile to hold a general election now, with a low number of lawmakers making it difficult to form a quorum.

"The Constitutional Court has accepted this case and we will look at the legal issues involved. If there is enough evidence, we may hand down a decision tomorrow," said court spokesman Pimol Thampithakpong.

The government argues the date of the election cannot be changed because the election decree has been signed off by the King.
