Thai police have launched a manhunt for four suspects believed to be behind twin bombings in southern Thailand that left at least 61 people injured.

Two explosions went off on Tuesday in front of a shopping centre in the southern city of Pattani, 1000 kilometres south of Bangkok.

Police are searching for four individuals captured by a security camera at the shopping centre, said police spokesman Krisana Pattanacharoen.

Among the 61 injured people, 20 are being treated in hospital while three remain in critical condition, Krisana added.

A first smaller explosion was followed by a "huge" car bomb that injured many people, Preecha Prachumthai of Pattani's police told German news agency DPA.

According to police, the car used was stolen but the owner could not be found.

Pattani is one of three provinces in southern Thailand affected by a long-running Muslim separatist insurgency.

Human Rights Watch said in a statement released early Wednesday, the bombings "appear intended to inflict maximum civilian casualties".

"The double bombing of a crowded shopping mall shows a vicious disregard for civilian lives," said the group's Asia director Brad Adams.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country but the Muslim-majority deep south bordering Malaysia is plagued by a separatist insurgency that has left more than 6500 people dead since 2004.
