The Block Glasshouse has started with a bang, winning Sunday night's television ratings.

The first episode of Nine Network's reality renovation series attracted 1.374 million viewers, who watched as teams got a first glimpse of their challenge - a massive 1980s office block in Melbourne's trendy Prahran.

The show, which continues nightly from Monday to Thursday, will provide a stiff challenge for Network Ten's MasterChef, which lagged behind in third.

MasterChef drew an audience of 1.261 million, according OzTAM's figures.

The X Factor took fifth place with 1.114 million tuning in, while The Voice Kids sat in eighth with a following of 933,000.

The ABC's architectural show Grand Designs made a surprise appearance in sixth spot with 988,000 viewers, beating both 60 Minutes and Sunday Night.
