The day after - What Liberal MPs said

On the morning after Malcolm Turnbull's defeat of Tony Abbott to take the prime ministership, Liberals MPs had a lot to say.

THE DAY AFTER - LIBERALS REACT

"There has been a change of prime minster but we are a very, very strong government." - Prime minister designate Malcolm Turnbull.

"It was a long night and it's going to be a big day today ... a lot of work to do." - Malcolm Turnbull.

I'm filled with optimism and ... in the weeks and months ahead, we'll be setting out more of those (economic) foundations that will ensure our prosperity in the years ahead." - Malcolm Turnbull.

"I know that the prime minister was aware that there was unhappiness ... He was calm. He was obviously very hurt." - Deputy Liberal Leader Julie Bishop on Tony Abbott.

"I'm not enjoying this ... It is a very difficult time." - Bishop on the ousting of Abbott.

"I'm aware of the parallels that will be drawn." - Bishop, asked about comparisons to Labor and Rudd/Gillard changeover.

"He said that he believed that we had been a good government in difficult circumstances and I think there was a great deal of respect for him," - Defence Minister Kevin Andrews on Abbott.

"Right now, I say to Tony thanks for always putting your hand up to serve. Thanks for loving your country. And thanks for being a good mate." - NSW Liberal Premier Mike Baird reaches out to Abbott on Facebook.

"A multi-millionaire who lives in a pink mansion on Sydney Harbour". - Labor frontbencher Jason Clare's verdict on Turnbull.
