There's something a little fishy about this beauty pageant.

Thousands of goldfish have vied for the title of Miss Goldfish in China's Fujian province.

Around 10000 fish including panda butterfly tails and pearlscales with red crowns contended to be crowned a champion in one of 16 categories.

The main categories include features, color, figure, swimming, appearance, and general impression.

In the "red and white ranchu" category, a goldfish with a curled tail fin and bright colours stood out among the 30 other contenders.

It's an expensive business with some of the fish in the competition selling for as much as $2000.

Goldfish originating from this region in China are often exported to Japan, Singapore and other countries in the world.
