The best of twitter for 2013

It's been another busy year on Twitter, with people from all walks of life using the microblog site to break news, air views, argue, make-up or simply share a laugh.

AAP Social Media Reporter Miles Godfrey reviews some of 2013's most memorable tweets:

"I'm incredibly late to the party but I'm here nonetheless, so what now?" - actress Megan Fox dispels online rumours of her death by joining Twitter. She quit a week later.

"The antisocial has become social" - NBA star Kobe Bryan also announces his arrival on Twitter.

"Mobs tearing up Logan. Did any of them do a day's work today, or was it business as usual and welfare on tap?" - Queensland MP Andrew Laming posts inflammatory comments about clashes between Aboriginal and Pacific Islander communities at Logan, south of Brisbane.

"Back in Austin and just layin' around," - Cyclist Lance Armstrong brushes off a damning 1000-page report detailing his doping, posting this tweet with a picture of himself gazing up at seven framed Tour de France yellow jerseys.

"I received an 'I wish you were dead' tweet just now. My dear friend, I am in my 80s, just be patient" - Australian cricket veteran and commentator Richie Benaud bats away a Twitter troll.

"I wouldn't let a gay person teach my children and I am not afraid to say it." - Former Queensland Senate candidate Bernard Gaynor was dumped by Katter's Australian Party not long after this comment.

"Funny how we celebrate invasion day by throwing bits of dead animals on a cooking fire just like the people we dispossessed." - Former ALP MP Steve Gibbons airs his controversial views about Australia Day.

"Chinese still hacking us, or were over the weekend." - News Corp chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch accuses China of hacking his companies.

"Thank you for your love and support." - Pope Benedict XVI's final tweet from his @pontifex account after resigning.

"Look, when I said you should give something up for Lent ..." - Ricky Gervais was among thousands who made jokes about the Pope's resignation.

"What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay." - The final message from Reeva Steenkamp, the model and girlfriend of South African Olympic star Oscar Pistorius, who was killed in a Valentine's Day shooting.

"A macho right-winger." - Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell describes former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who died in April.

"Couple of freaky explosions from the marathon finishing line." - Paralympian Kurt Fearnley, after completing the bombed Boston Marathon.

"Breaking: Two explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured." - hackers gain access to Associated Press's Twitter account, causing mass panic in US markets.

"Warren is in the house." - Investment guru Warren Buffett joins Twitter.

"I'm delighted by the news that the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby." - British Prime Minister David Cameron was among millions tweeting about the royal baby.

"Shock me @crashcraddock1 talking s*** about ipl jealous p**ck. Get a real job. All you do is bag people. #getalife." - Australian cricketer David Warner goes into meltdown after journalists criticise the Indian Premier League.

"I hope that you will wake up and understand that you in fact are a danger to women." - Irish Sinead O'Connor criticises Miley Cyrus's raunchy antics at the MTV Awards.

"Top of the mornin to ya." - Cyrus responds to O'Connor.

"Mommy/baby are healthy & resting. We appreciate all of the love." - Khloe Kardashian announces that her sister Kim and rapper Kanye West have a new baby.

"We've confidentially submitted an S-1 to the SEC for a planned IPO. This Tweet does not constitute an offer of any securities for sale," Twitter announces its debut on the stock market.

"Australia's Tony Abbott rare exception. Opponent Rudd all over the place convincing nobody." - Rupert Murdoch offers his views on September's federal election campaign.

"With Mr Abbott's swearing in today I cease formally to be Prime Minister. Thank you Oz for the opportunity to serve. KRudd." - Kevin Rudd relinquishes the prime ministership before retiring from politics altogether in November.

"Best wishes to Kevin, Therese & their family as they embark on the next stage of their lives." Julia Gillard in a dignified but understated tweet following Kevin Rudd's announcement.
