The Oscars: a tale of two sexes

In the Oscars eight-decade history, only three women have been nominated for the Best Director award. Guess how many have won.

While the Oscars are recognised as the leading awards in the film industry, the gender representation in different awards is a vastly different story.

Just three female directors have been nominated for the director award in the past 25 years.

In that time, just one woman has won the coveted award.

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the award for her 2009 film, the Hurt Locker

This year, there are no women nominated in the directing, cinematography and sound mixing categories, among several other categories.
While there are several gender-specific acting awards, like best actor and best actress, no such award covers both genders.

However, women are over-represented in some award categories.

In the costume design category, women have taken the majority of nominations and awards since 1988.

This year, the costume design category had no male nominees.
On Twitter, the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag is trending.

Many social media users say people of caucasian appearance dominate the nominations this year.
