The results that made a difference

Several seats were in the spotlight at Saturday's NSW. Here's how they played out.

NSW ELECTION: HIGH PROFILE RESULTS

AUBURN

Labor retain. Opposition Leader Luke Foley successfully made the transition from the upper house to the lower house after winning the Sydney seat of Auburn. He was parachuted into the seat after Barbara Perry was "encouraged" to retire.

BALLINA

Green gain from Nationals. Was always hard for Nats to retain as popular MP Don Page was retiring at election and with strong local anti-coal seam gas sentiments. Incoming Green MP Tamara Smith has done well to fend off the ALP in this North Coast seat despite ALP Leader Luke Foley's numerous visit to the electorate.

BALMAIN

Greens appear to have fought off Labor to retain the gentrified inner-Sydney seat. High profile former Labor minister Verity Firth fails to unseat Greens MP Jamie Parker, despite securing a swing of 4.4 per cent.

BLUE MOUNTAINS

ALP gain from Liberals. A bellwether seat since the 1970s which has bucked the recent trend of falling with the winning party. Labor's Trish Doyle has taken the seat back for the party ending Roza Sage's four years as MP.

EAST HILLS

Liberals are likely fight off Labor to retain. Labor put up candidate Cameron Murphy, son of former federal Labor attorney-general Lionel Murphy, to win back the most marginal seat in the state from Glenn Brookes. Murphy complained of a dirty tricks campaign and will be disappointed not to pick up this winnable seat.

LAKEMBA

Labor retain. High-profile local high school principal Jihad Dib has retained the seat. The community leader was parachuted into the multicultural seat. The seat was held by former premier Morris Iemma before he retired in 2008.

LISMORE

Greens gain from Nationals. Another North Coast seat where there were strong anti-CSG campaigns being waged. Labor focused heavily on this electorate during the campaign, but finished a distant third to the National's Thomas George and winner, Adam Guise from the Greens.

LONDONDERRY

Labor gain from Liberals. Prue Car has won back the traditional Labor seat from the Liberals. Its previous Liberal MP Bart Bassett quit the party after allegations were made to ICAC about illegal donations at the 2011 election.

MACQUARIE FIELDS

Labor gain from Liberals. Another seat where the Liberal MP was caught up in ICAC donations allegations. Garry Edwards quit the party and stood as an independent. he lost, as did the Liberal candidate Johanna Uidam, with Yasmin Catley taking it for Labor.

STRATHFIELD

Too close to call. The Liberal party's Charles Casuscelli is trying to fend off high-profile Labor candidate Jodi McKay. McKay won hero status after it emerged that she had refused bribes.
