Thiem, Monaco reach Austrian tennis semis

Dominic Thiem will play Juan Monaco of Argentina in the semi-finals of the Kitzbuehel Cup in Austria after a 6-4 7-5 win over titleholder Marcel Granollers

Austrian Dominic Thiem beat defending champion Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-4 7-5 on Friday to reach his first career semi-final at the Kitzbuehel Cup.

The 20-year-old Thiem, the youngest player in the top 50, will play 2008 champion Juan Monaco of Argentina, who defeated fourth-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-2 3-6 6-3. Both quarter-finals were moved from Thursday because of rain.

In the other semi-final, David Goffin of Belgium plays Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina.

Thiem was 3-1 down in the opening set before winning 10 of the next 15 games for a 5-2 lead in the second. He failed to serve out the match at 5-3 but broke Granollers again at 6-5.
