Third seeds come back to win doubles title

Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova have beaten Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson to win the WTA Finals doubles title.

Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova have won the doubles title at the year-end WTA Finals in Singapore, defeating Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson 4-6 6-4 10-5.

The third seeds became more aggressive in the tiebreak as they chased victory, and ruthlessly exploited their less-experienced opponents.

Babos said she wasn't confident of victory at the end of the first set.

"I thought we were already in the cemetery and we came back from the death," she said.

"They were all over us. I thought early in the second set we had to change something and after that we were so much more powerful and aggressive."

The first set was even until Dutchwoman Bertens and Larsson from Sweden snared a break to steal the set.

The second followed a similar pattern until Hungarian Babos and Hlavackova of the Czech Republic broke their opponents in the eighth game, and the match headed to the super tiebreak.

Larsson double faulted on the opening point of the tiebreak and it just went downhill from there.

Babos squealed in delight as the final winner was hit to earn them the Martina Navratilova Trophy.

The two teams had both knocked out unbackable favourites on the road to the final.

Babos and Hlavackova beat World No.1 team Martina Hingis and Yung Jan-Chan, while Bertens and Larsson dispatched defending champions and Olympic gold medallists Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Bertens and Larsson had also eliminated Australians Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty in the first round.

The tournament concludes later on Sunday with the singles final between Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams.
