Third straight Jeffreys Bay surf lay day

Wind-affected conditions have forced officials to declare a third-straight lay day at the World Surf League event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

The World Surf League (WSL) event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa is still yet to start, with a third-straight lay day called by organisers.

Stop No.6 on the WSL tour has been affected by Friday's wind-affected conditions, with small waves on the opening two days forcing officials to declare lay days.

"The conditions are similar to yesterday but we have some strong 'devil winds' that are damaging the waves," said WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel.

"In addition, we have onshore winds projected for lunchtime today so we've decided to call the contest off for the day. We'll be back tomorrow morning (Saturday) to take another look at conditions and we are expecting the winds to be more favourable."
