Solomon Islands has elected its first prime minister since the departure of Australian-led peacekeeping troops from the Pacific island neighbour last year.

The third time PM Manesseh Sogavare has previously had an acrimonious relationship with Australia but says he hopes it will be cordial in future.

He opposed the 10-year long Australian-led RAMSI peacekeeping mission and in 2006 expelled the then Australian High Commissioner for allegedly meddling in Solomon Islands affairs.

Mr Sogavare said on the steps of parliament after being announced as prime minister that his first priority would be fixing the economy.

Professor Clive Moore from the University of Queensland has studied Solomon Islands politics for decades and told Stefan Armbruster, Mr Sogavare represents the best hope for the country's future.
