A dispirited Jordan Thompson says he needs to reassess his game following another early grand slam exit at Wimbledon.
Thompson went down 6-2 6-4 6-3 in just 90 minutes to 2017 semi-finalist Sam Querrey, who has beaten reigning champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in the last two years at the All England Club.
The opening round draw against the 11th-seeded American was symptomatic of Thompson's luck this season, with the 24-year-old struggling to recreate the form that saw him beat Murray 13 months ago.
He has exited all three grand slams this year at the first hurdle and was also bundled out early in Brisbane and Sydney in January.
Although he has enjoyed some moderate success on the Challenger circuit, it has been a different story on the ATP Tour with his ranking dropping to 101 in the world.
"I am going to take a little bit of time off, get back into tennis in the following week, relax and get the body fully right," Thompson said.
"Results speak for themselves and I haven't done well this year. I think I have done well to stay where I am and be at the grand slams.
"You need to be able to do everything in tennis. Everyone is so good and they all have their weapons.
"For someone like me, who is a little bit smaller than most players now, I need to work on movement, speed, racquet-head speed, the whole lot."
Thompson, who was ranked inside the world's top 70 less than a year ago, will learn after Wimbledon in a fortnight if he's made the cut for the main draw for next month's US Open or will need to go through qualifying.
"My grand slam record is not good. It's incredibly frustrating but you just have got to move on and get on with preparing for the US season," Thompson said.
One small crumb of comfort for the rugby league tragic, who grew up with posters of West Tigers great Brett Hodgson on his wall, is that he'll get the chance to watch next Wednesday's State of Origin clash.
NSW are chasing a first series whitewash over Queensland in 18 years and Thompson will be tuning in in London.
"Hopefully we can get 3-0," he said.
