Caretaker coach Mark Thompson wants to remain at Essendon but senses there won't be a role for him at the AFL club in 2015.
Thompson is currently filling in for suspended club icon James Hird, who will retake the reins when the Bombers' 2014 campaign ends.
Thompson has been tight-lipped on his future this season and said on Monday he was yet to broach the topic with Essendon.
But the man who coached Geelong to premierships in 2007 and 2009 also revealed he has doubts over whether there will be an offer on the table.
"I don't want to just walk out and leave this team either, I am invested," Thompson said on Fox Footy.
"It's just where it all fits. I'm not sure where it all fits.
"The big supertax (soft cap on football department spending) comes in next year and Hirdy's coming back to coach.
"I'm not sure how it would work."
Thompson made it clear he wanted to say and had a good relationship with Hird.
"But I don't see one (an available position) there at the moment because it's just they're all filled," he added.
"The agreement was it was easy for me to come in and take it (Hird's position) because I could leave at the end of the year and it wouldn't adjust or affect the other positions at the club.
"Neil Craig's in his role (head of coaching development and strategy). Goody (Simon Goodwin) is in his role (senior assistant coach) and Hirdy just slips into mine.
"I was going to slip out."
Hird was barred from coaching this season as part of the league's punishments for the 2012 supplements saga.
Essendon, who were also kicked out of the 2013 finals, are currently seventh on the ladder and in the box seat to be alive come September.
