Former Labor MP Craig Thomson says he was cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to election donations.

Employment Minister Eric Abetz on Wednesday compared Bill Shorten's non-disclosure of a 2007 campaign donation to that of Mr Thomson, who he said had "engaged in using union money to fund political activities".

However, Mr Thomson, the former MP for the NSW seat of Dobell and Health Services Union secretary, told AAP on Thursday the minister had his facts wrong.

"The allegations against me about non-disclosure of election donations ... I was totally cleared by the AEC [electoral commission]," Mr Thomson said.

"Abetz is just plain wrong in his comparison. All election spending was accounted for and done properly."
