After years of public denials, the 31-year-old made the announcement during an interview with veteran British journalist Michael Parkinson, which was broadcast on Network Ten last night.

Thorpe also discussed the depression that dogged him from his teenage years, his abuse of alcohol to cope, and thoughts of ending his life, which he dismissed because he couldn't deal with leaving friends and family.

Thorpe issued a brief message on Twitter after the broadcast, thanking everybody for messages of support.
