The Refugee Council of Australia says an accidental leak of personal information by the Immigration Department has put at risk the welfare of thousands of asylum-seekers and their families.

The Department has admitted to the the inadvertent breach following news reports the full names, nationalities and boat arrival details of up to ten-thousand asylum-seekers were published online.

A statement from the Department of Immigration says the information was never intended to be made public, but acknowledges the file was vulnerable to unauthorised access.

The CEO of the Refugee Council of Australia, Paul Power, has told Michael Kenny he believes the leak has very serious implications.
