Thousands have partied through the streets of Sydney, dancing and waving placards protesting what they say are restrictions on having a good time.

No one was arrested at the Reclaim The Streets rally which began on Sunday afternoon at the Hyde Park Fountain, worked it's way up William Street to Kings Cross and ended with a bash at Taylor Square.

The event is billed as part protest and part street party, "but most importantly it's a celebration of what our public life could be," a statement on Reclaim The Street's Facebook page says.

"The decay of our nightlife is a visible symptom of a much bigger problem: the influence of money upon policy," the statement says.

"As property developers, casino owners, miners, and bankers fight over their own agendas, the interests of the average person take a backseat.

"We believe the city should be affordable, open and supportive of everyone who works, lives or plays here."

Below the statement is a list of 99 things to dance for, including support for affordable rent, a casual beer in the park, mental health awareness and an inclusive country that welcomes refugees.

About 5000 people attended, according to the Facebook page.
