Victorian families have celebrated the new year in Melbourne with a spectacular fireworks display.

More than 100,000 people gathered in Yarra Park with picnics and sparklers to celebrate with friends and family.

Live music played in the background as the crowd counted down to the 9.30 pm fireworks display which was met with cheers and anticipation for the midnight show.

Werribee father Chris Newnham said he came because the event was free and family friendly.

"Where else would you go with a young family - it's a good alternative to a pub or staying home," he said.

Joanna Greenham from Glen Iris went to the event last year and brought friends back with her this year.

"Its fun, it feels safe and it's something nice you can do with friends," she said.

Revellers have also flocked to live sites around the city, with Docklands, King's Domain, Flagstaff Gardens and Treasury Gardens offering entertainment and a vantage point for the midnight fireworks.

Federation Square and the banks of the Yarra are also filling with people ready to celebrate the new year.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the night got off to a quiet start with revellers so far behaving themselves.
