Thousands of workers have rallied in Sydney, shutting down a major city street outside Parliament House to send a message to the federal and state governments.

The crowd - including nurses, teachers, disability and electrical workers - chanted "Fight for our rights" and are set to march down Macquarie Street to protest against federal policies including cuts to Medicare and higher university fees.

The rally, part of the national day of action, has also criticised the NSW government's privatisation of public assets, including hospitals and the planned electricity sell-off.
